History


Imnandi bakery’s roots can be traced back to the small town of Kirkwood, situated in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Over time it has developed into a modern bakery primarily baking rusks. Christa Smith is the founder and co-owner together with her son, Gerhard. In 2010 Christa placed second in the countrywide entrepreneurial competition for woman, hosted by Sanlam and the Landbouweekblad.

In 2017 Gerhard joined Imnandi Bakery to expand it to a national footprint and drives the marketing, distribution and financial affairs of the business.

1990 was a particular difficult time for Christa and her husband, Louis. Their little girl of 5 years old, passed away and further hardship was brought forth by the continuous drought that plagued the farm.

Christa realized that she not only had to do something to keep her thoughts positive, but also had to try and make a financial contribution to make it through the drought. As a farmer’s wife there was little she couldn’t do, from dressmaking to baking. She started off by knitting sweaters and baking rusks and biscuits. The sweaters were sold at the farmer’s cooperation and the first batch of aniseed rusks were sold to the local supermarket. Wedding cakes, puff pastry tarts and other confectionary soon followed and were supplied to shops in the neighbouring towns. The demand in both industries skyrocketed which forced her to choose between them. The answer was revealed to her when her 9 year old son, while sitting close by her side on the kitchen table, spontaneously yelled, “Bake biscuits mom!” She instantly knew that baking is the way forward!

She quickly realized that her effort to contribute to the household expenses took off quite well and that she now not only wears the hat of a farmer’s wife, but also that of a business woman. Louis installed another 5 residential ovens and upgraded the power line. Shortly thereafter he had to build an entire new kitchen with enough room to install industrial ovens. Since then Christa has had no regrets and as her children grew up and studied further after school, the bakery’s income was always a trusted source that provided pocket money and aided with tuition fees. With the continuous support of her husband she entered the larger business arena and started rubbing shoulders with some of the large retailers.

Christa and Louis still resides on Soetkloof where Imnandi bakery today is a well-known and trusted brand. The success of the bakery can be attributed to Christa’s sheer dedication and love for it. It started out of necessity, but with the guidance and mercy from Above, her husband, children and employees who shares her passion, it has grown to where it is today.

A recipe from mother-in-law’s tried-and-tested recipe book was the beginning.

Some ingredients were doubled, removed and added and after quite a few attempts Imnandi’s very own recipe received the stamp of approval from its satisfied customers. Six different types of rusks are currently being baked.
